ACCESSIBILITY STATEMENT
for guests with special needs

Introduction:

Since 1998, Fron Fawr has been taking steps to improve the 'accessibility' of its cottages, including changing policies, practices and procedures; providing aids and equipment to facilitate access. Where there is a physical feature that makes it difficult to access or use a cottage, every effort is being made (and will continue to be made) to remove, alter or avoid that feature. Subject to the physical constraints or limitations arising from either making changes to cottages created prior to 1998 from traditional stone and slate barns (non domestic dwellings) or the fact that Fron Fawr lies on the side of a hill over looking the north Pembrokeshire countryside.

In preparing this 'accessibility statement' we aim to identify physical features that may make access to, and/or use of, Fron Fawr's cottages either difficult (or impossible) for guests with special needs. This 'statement' was produced in August 2004 and will be updated as and when required.

General:

Fron Fawr is located 3/4 mile from the village of Boncath. To find Fron Fawr from the centre of the village take the road between the pub and the village store & post office. Follow the road for 3/4 of a mile and Fron Fawr's entrance is on the left, look for the sign on the right. Fron Fawr's entrance drive (approx 286 yards/261 metres) is a single track stone track, the entrance to which is equipped with a 'cattle grid', but also has a 14 foot wide farm gate along side.

The drive leads to large turning area and car parking areas constructed of loose gravel. There is ample parking within 18 yards/17 metres to 110 yards/101 metres of each cottage. However, by special arrangement one car can be parked close to the entrances of cottages Taliesin (8.0 yards/7.3 metres), Myrddin, Aneirin, and Glyndwr (5.0 yards/4.6 metres) - distances car to cottage door.

Fron Fawr's Farm House and its 5 cottages surround the gravelled 'turning area' on three sides. On one side is the Farm House and two sides are the cottages; Glyndwr and Aneirin on one side with Taliesin, Madog and Myrddin on the other side.

Public Transport:

The nearest railway station is at Carmarthen. A distance of 25-30 miles depending on route taken. Boncath has limited public bus services. In view of the distance to the nearest railway station and limited bus services, Fron Fawr is not suitable for guests without a car or similar transport.

Access:

Cottages Taliesin, Madog and Myrddin were converted 30 years ago from traditional stone and slate barns. Cottages Glyndwr and Aneirin were also converted from traditional stone and slate barns in 1998. Because all the cottages were created from non-domestic built dwellings there are some 'access' issues. However, in creating Fron Fawr's latest cottage (Aneirin) we have introduced some specific 'access' aids; Stannah? stair chair lift, BathKnight? in the double bedroom's en-suit bath, and a downstairs walk-in shower with seat. As and when we undertake further developments, re-decoration, re-fitting or purchase new provisions and equipment, we will do what we can (subject to physically restrictions that are either impossible to overcome or are financially beyond our resources) to meet the needs of guests with special needs.

Access to and within cottages:

Taliesin (4 star)

There are 6 steps between the drive and Taliesin's front door and within the cottage there 3 steps between the kitchen/dinning area and the lounge. And there are 3 steps down to the access path from the lounge's French doors. Taliesin's bathroom* (bath with overhead shower) and toilet are located on the ground floor adjacent to its single bedroom. Taliesin's main double bedroom (with wash-hand basin) and single or twin bunk bedroom** are located upstairs. Currently Taliesin is not fitted with any specific accessibility aids.

Madog (4 star)

There are 6 steps between the drive and Madog's front door. Madog's main double bedroom (with wash-hand basin), single and single or twin bunk bedroom** are located upstairs. Madog's bathroom* (bath with overhead shower) and toilet are located on the ground floor. Currently Madog is not fitted with any specific accessibility aids.

Myrddin (4 star)

There are 6 steps between the drive and Myrddin's front door and 1 step down to its patio from which there are 3 steps up to the garden. Myrddin's main double bedroom (with wash-hand basin), a second double and single or twin bunk bedroom** are located upstairs. Myrddin's bathroom* (bath with overhead shower) and toilet are located on the ground floor. Currently Myrddin is not fitted with any specific accessibly aids.

Glyndwr (5 star)

There are 4 steps between the drive and Glyndwr's front door and within the cottage there 4 steps between the lower ground kitchen/dinning area and the lounge. From the front door there are 3 steps up to its patio and from there 2 steps up to its garden. From its lounge French doors there 1 step down to the patio. On the lower ground floor level Glyndwr has three toilets; one with bath, one with shower. All its bedrooms are located upstairs - on one level a double (with wash-hand basin) and a single or twin bunk rooms** with both adjacent to a toilet with shower. Access to the hallway leading to Glyndwr's twin bedroom and main bedroom (with wash-hand basin) is by means of 2 steps.

** The twin bunk bedrooms have beds 2’6” wide and are of a design that allows the upper bed to be folded down so they can be used as a twin bunk or single bed. They are loved by children but are extremely sturdy and quite suitable for ‘young at heart’ adults.

Assistance Dogs:

Assistance dogs are welcome, but we do ask that they not be allowed on the furniture and because Fron Fawr's fields are used to graze sheep and cattle that they are appropriately controlled when outside.

For more information:

We hope that this Accessibility Statement has been of help in determining whether or not any of Fron Fawr's cottages can meet any special needs you may have. However, should you need anymore information then please do not hesitate to contact us. In the event that Fron Fawr is unable to meet your special needs, we will do our very best to recommend alternative properties that might be better equipped to meet your needs.
